Director of Product Design
at Litmus
The company
Litmus is the global leader in quality assurance for email marketers. It’s a well-known and well-loved brand in the space, with customers running the gamut from small agencies up to Fortune 500 enterprises.
My role
I led the Product Design organization, reporting to the VP of Product & Growth. We were a relatively small design team, but were responsible for the design of the entire product suite, as well as User Research in support of all of our activity in Product and Design.
Additionally, I played a key role in Product Leadership, partnering on Vision, Strategy, and Roadmapping initiatives.
Quick Reference
Customers
Litmus has a wide range of customers, from agencies, to individual consultants, up to large enterprises. One of the biggest design challenges we faced was how to create a great experience for each type of customer, especially given the diversity of features in the product, which were not equally valuable (or sometimes even relevant) to different customers.
Business
Litmus is sold both via self-service online trials, drive by a relatively new Product-Led Growth motion, as well as by direct sales to their larger SMB and Enterprise customers.
Products
Litmus technically has a single product, but its feature set is incredibly wide-ranging, from the core features aimed at testing emails for rendering issues, to email coding, visual building, personalized image creation, and various integrations.
Design Team
The design team was comprised of Product Designers of different levels, including one manager, as well as a dedicated User Researcher.
Design System
We had a robust design system, used by the designers across the product suite to ensure quality and consistency of our designs, as well as a tight interlock with the engineering team to allow for efficient and accurate front-end development.
Engineering
Litmus had squads that were tasked with different goals across the product. We staffed each with at least one designer, and worked closely with their Agile/Scrum development process.
